Jake Bailey came to talk to the senior school today. Jake Bailey was a head boy at both intermediate and high school. He went to Christchurch Boys High. He is now 21 years old but when he was diagnosed with cancer he was 18 years old. He is pretty funny.
He was here to tell us a little about his journey through cancer and also to tell us some life skills. He was brought here by life education.
Before he knew he had cancer he felt a pain in his jaw. He went to the dentist and the dentist told him there was this weird spot of something in his jaw. Later, before some of his teeth were to be taken out, the whole bottom of his jaw went completely numb. He also started vomiting out blood. The was taken to hospital where the doctors took some tests including, a bone marrow transplant. A doctor he had never seen later cam in and gently told him he had cancer.
He was told that if he didn't get chemotherapy now, he would die in the next two weeks. Jake Bailey had cancer for 4-5 months. Most people who have cancer have it for about 1-2 years. Jake had Burkitt's Non-hodgkin lymphoma. It is the fastest growing cancer ever. It doubles in size everyday!
Some of the life skills he told us about were resilience, happiness, leadership and bravery. At the end he told us that we need to do as much as we can with our lives and live our lives also on the behalf of those who didn't survive cancer and other illnesses. He wanted us to be the best us we could be.
He told us that happiness is something you earn and something you practise and try to have. Leadership is something that you have. You will need it later in life. To be resilient you have to try and try again. Resilient is something you also earn, he said. Bravery is something that you can develop. Most people in their lives will need a lot of bravery.
I think that Jake Bailey is a great person, who inspires a lot of people. I would recommend either watching his speech he gave otr reading the book he wrote, What Cancer Taught Me.
