No Need For Plastic!!

As part of our topic we have been learning about reducing waste. To help the environment with this my class made fabric bags to use instead of plastic bags. We also made lots of beeswax wraps. Beeswax wrap is used instead of glad wrap. Hopefully it helps the environment a little as we are not using plastic. I learnt how to make a beeswax cloth and hopefully I can make some more at home to help the environment. I enjoyed making these because they are so handy.
All you have to do is put fabric with grated beeswax on baking paper
and put another layer of baking paper on top of that. You then have to iron it and melt the wax into the cloth. For the fabric bags we had to cut out our pattern and then sew it. Here are some photo`s.

to gather and check information on a topic.
-I am learning to explain why the author has written a text.

Read the text, ‘Turning Old Into New’ and then complete the following activities.

  1. Why is recycling a good idea? Recycling is a good Idea because it gets reused and we
  2. don't have to throw it out.


  1. How many tons of rubbish do New Zealanders send to landfills every year? New
  2. Zealanders spend 2.5 million tonnes of rubbish to dumps each year.


  1. When rubbish breaks down what gas does it produce?  What environmental problem
  2. does this contribute to? Its produces CO2 and Methane. It contributes to global warming.


  1. Complete this sentence:  Everything we use is made from  Earth`s__________        
  2. Natural____________ Recources_____________

  1. Explain where these resources come from;


Wood: Wood comes from trees or plants.


Metal: Metal comes from rocks that have been mined underground.


Plastic: Plastic comes from Oil.

6) How does oil form? Oil comes from Plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.

7) What are some of the things glass can be recycled into?  Windows, More bottles, Glasses.                                                                     


8) What are some of the things cardboard can be recycled into? Books, More cardboard and
Paper


9) What can plastic with the number 1 be recycled into? CD`s, Carpet, Containers. They are
Poisoning our underwater sea life and wrecking our sea life.


10)  Attach a google drawing here that explains how number 1 plastics can be turned into
clothing.


11) What are microfibres and what is the problem with them?They are poisoning our sea life
and wrecking the food chain. Microfibers are tiny fibres from our clothing.


12) What is Earth Overshoot day?Earth Overshoot day is when we reach the limit of
resources we should have used over that year. In 2017 it was August the 2nd.

Glossary - Write what these words mean


Atoms:The smallest particle of a substance that can exist by itself or be combined with
other atoms to form a molecule.


Carded:Aligned in the same direction.


Global Warming:A gradual increase in the earth's temperature.


Malt: Barley or other grain used for beer.


Natural resources: Materials found in nature.


Synthetic: something that is made by people and is the result of combining different chemicals.


In class we will be working on projects looking at issues around rubbish and what we can
do to help reduce this problem.
