Space timeline Reading tasks.

Term 2 Weeks 5-6

Purpose of this reading activity is to: increase our knowledge of space exploration and understand how our knowledge and ideas about space have changed over time (science). We are also learning to read non-fiction texts and use our writing skills to share our understanding of this topic and our ideas (literacy). Throughout this task we will need to use the skills of ‘Thinking’ and using ‘Language, Symbols and Text.’

He discovered Jupiter's moons and he also found Lunar craters. 1610

9) Who discovered the first asteroid?

Giuseppe Piazzi discovered the first asteroid. 1801

2) What was Sputnik 1?

Sputnik 1 was the first satellite that was launched into space by Russia. 1957

3) In what year was NASA founded? And what does NASA mean? In 1958 National Aeronautics and Space Administration was founded. 1958

6) Who was the first woman in space? And where was she from?

Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space. She was from Russia. 1963

4)Where did Mariner 4 fly past?

Mariner 4 flew past Mars. 1965

7) In what year did Apollo 11 land on the moon?

Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969.

10) What country launched Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space?  America launched voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space. 1977

8) What happened that led to all space shuttles being grounded for 3 years?

Space shuttle Challenger exploded killing seven astronauts aboard and was grounded for three years. 1986

11) When was the international space station completed?

The international space station was finished in 2010. 1986

1)How long did it take for the Cassini probe to arrive at Saturn? It took Cassini probe nearly 7 years. 2004

12) What was interesting about New Horizons information about Pluto? Pluto was 50 miles larger than first thought. 2015

After reading this information...

1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution to our understanding of space? Why? (summarising key ideas)

I think that Galileo Galilei made the biggest contribution to our understanding of space because he made the first telescopic observation of the night sky and he discovered Jupiter's moons, lunar craters and the different phases of Venus. I think this led to us knowing a lot more about space other than what we can see. I think it was a great contribution to space because we could then see what the night sky looked like beyond what we could see. HI

    2) What do you think was the most important machine or        invention in helping us investigate space? Why? (summarising key ideas)

I think that the V2( first rocket that went into space)  rocket was the most important machine to help us in space because people could then see what space really looked like. It was also a really big achievement for the people who made it. I also think that it changed our thinking about space

    3) What would you like to investigate about space? Why?

I would like to investigate space stations because I know nothing about them. I would like to know what countries own/run the space station and who made it. I would also like to know when it was made.

The countries that that helped with the  are United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada.

Construction of the space station began in 1998.

The space station was American-funded.

The space station is 390 kilometres above earth’s surface.

The space station may be comp ]#ted by the end of this decade.
