Noho Marae

NOHO MARAE

A few weeks ago room 1 and 8 went the the Arahura Marae.
We had a few parents come with us. The parents and teachers
that stayed the night were, Matt, Mrs Kemp and Mrs Glue and
Kelly. Other parents and Teachers like, Clark, Steph, Phae, Alana
and Miss Ireland came as well. We are very lucky that they came
because we would not have been able to go if they had not come.

When we arrived at the Marae we got welcomed on with the
Powhiri. Once the Powhiri was over we took our shoes off
and went into the Marae for the speeches.
When the speeches were over we went into the wharae kai
(dining room) for some morning tea, we had some savory
pies and some red velvet cake. Next we went back into the
wharenui (meeting house) to share our mihi’s which took a
long time. After  we had shared our mihi’s we went down to the
arahura river to try and find some Greenstone. While we were
down there 2-5 people found some greenstone. We also went
down to the beach to make sculptures of things from the story
pountini and waitaiki. I was in a group with Dakota, Sasha and
Rebekah we made a small waka (boat) that all of us could just fit
in. Once we had judged the sculptures we walked back to the
Marae and had some afternoon tea.

Later in the evening we had dinner which was chicken
with salad and potatoes and bread. For dessert we
had more red velvet cake and pavlova. When we finished
dinner and desert we went outside and did some activities.
I did weaving for  45 minutes and then I played Ki-O-Rahi for
another 45 minutes. While we were playing Ki-O-Rahi it got
really dark so we couldn’t see the ball so we went inside for the
last 5 minutes. Then we went and sat outside around the fire
and had s'mores while we were having s'mores we sung some
waiata (songs) like Pukanakana and Karoro e. Then we went to
bed at 10pm. The next day we got up and had breakfast at 8am.
Then we packed up and left to go and do the  Mananui Tramline
walk. That took two hours, along the way we had a checklist with
some plants that we had to find. Then once we finished the walk
we went back to school just in time for lunch.

We went to Arahura Marae on the West Coast of New Zealand.
Arahura Marae is very close to the Arahura river.
The people that are the tangata whenua of the marae own
the river. The Arahura Marae is close to the Tasman sea as well.

We went to the Marae on Wednesday the fifth of March 2019
staying overnight. The season was Autumn.

This experience worked because we had so many adults
helping us. For making the sand boat we used sand, grass
and rocks. We had a wonderful cook making the meals for us.
She must have been working so hard! When we went looking
for greenstone a man from the marae came with us and showed
us what the greenstone looked like. He was really helpful.
He knows what greenstone looks like because he has seen
it so many times in his life and he has probably been taught
how to recognise it.

Camp letter

20 November 2018

Dear Gemma

Thank you so so much for taking us on camp. I really enjoyed it.
All the organising was done really well. How many different hikes do you do per year?
So far at Arthurs pass on camp I have done the Bealey Spur Hike and the Anti Crow
Hut Hike.  A thing I learnt about you is that you get lots of schools coming to do th
e hikes and that you do lots of hikes regularly!

I liked how you set up and ran the games like Huckle Buckle,
the Tarp game, the Carpet game, the Spider Web, the Tyre game
and Chuck the Dino. My personal favourites of those games was the
Carpet game
and Huckle Buckle. Huckle Buckle really got you thinking when you
were running up
to meet your partner. Me and Sasha (my partner) ended up winning.
The carpet game was really good to get me knowing my classmates.
The Spider game also had to have some maths done in your head of
who was lightest and who would go through each hole. I ended up going
through a bottom hole that was low to the ground but wide. What other
games do you usually run?

The Tramp was also a personal favourite for me. I really
enjoyed it because it had some challenging spots and easy fun spots.
I loved where we stopped for lunch on the ‘cliff’ and we could run around, wild.
I do lots of tramps but have never done one that is on a dry river bed and super rocky.
It was a challenging part of the hike for me because I get sore feet  easily and the rocks
certainly weren’t helping. When I stood in a little stream it felt good though!
About how many times have you done that walk? It was soooo fun!
Me and my friends enjoyed it so much that we are going to go back
and do the hike again together! We are going to swim where we river crossed.

The River crossing really got my brain thinking.
It was such a fun thing to do and I think that it
was a lot funner than last year because it was deeper
and swifter! Do you usually or have you ever done river crossings there?
I was in group with my friends Sasha, Mackenzie, Billie and Summer.
My team worked really well together I think we did a good job at the river crossing.
When I got out of the water my feet were so cold but they warmed up on the walk back.

Somewhere I would like to go for more camps is Arthurs Pass and Gentle Annie

Thank you again.

Ngā mihi
Yours sincerely

Arahura marae recount.

Here is my writing about a trip to the Arahura Marae I went on.

This is a piece of writing that retells and evaluates (what you think) events or experiences.

Title
A brief name for the experience or event.
Arahura Marae
Orientation
Tells when and where the event began and who was there.
Last week on Thursday the senior school went to the Arahura marae. We went in the morning and separated to travel to the marae in separate cars. I traveled with my mum and a few room 1 girls. we are going to learn about staying on a marae. I was feeling excited. I was not nervous at all.We got to the marae at approximately 9:45.

Sequence of events
Tells the events in the order they happened.

You need to have a minimum of 3-4 events. Remember one topic per paragraph.  Your paragraph should have an introductory sentence use a time sequence word/phrase and then detail.

After, arriving we were welcomed onto the amazing beautiful marae with a powhiri. For the powhiri a woman called out from the  marae and Miss Ireland answered in maori like the other lady. This is called a karanga. It sounded beautiful. All the people walked forward. After that we went inside and the men did a kind of  walking- non-action haka. This is called a whaikōrero. A whaikōrero is a speech of welcome.

Next, we had  the morning tea and it was delicious. There were tonnes of savouries and some fruit. There were also some very popular sandwiches which most people enjoyed. There were beautiful green and black table runners to match the colours of the marae. It had amazing lights in the dining room.

After that, we all went into the wharenui  to share our mihi. There was about 80 people who shared their mihi. A few people mucked up! I was one of them. It took a long time to get through everyone-about 1 hour , but it was nice to know a few things about everyone.

Next we had lunch. For lunch we had to bring our own and there was a huge deck for everyone to sit on . I sat with my friends.

After that, we walked down to the river and tried to find pounamu. Some people ended up finding amazing pieces of pounamu. We had about an hour to try and find a piece of pounamu. Soon after that we walked further on to the beach and had a taniwha sculpture competition and my group came nothing. My group did a 3D taniwha but it just was a head and it had no body. We used whatever was on the beach to make our taniwha.

Next was dinner. When we got back, we stayed in the marae and played a few games before dinner. I played uno with a few friends. When it was dinner time we went into the room where we have dinner in and ate dinner. For dinner we had potato, chicken,  and loads more. I got served heaps!

After dinner we all went outside to do the evening activities. The activities some people were in were: Rippa rugby, Ki o rahi,Weaving,Tukutuku and soap carving. I was in Tukutuku  and Soap carving. There were a lot of adults that helped with these activities. I enjoyed the soap carving better because you had to think of Māori patterns not English patterns. I heard that in Ki o rahi you did the game Ki o rahi for half an hour and then you did rakau throwing. It was a fun thing to do. We ended the evening activities at 9:00.

Soon after that we were roasting marshmallows and making them into s'mores by a fire.  The s’mores were really good. We sang waiata while we were eating them.

Finally we got into bed and MOST of us went to sleep. I was not one of them. They must of had the heaters on a hundred because it was SO, SO, SO hot inside.

When it was morning(6:00) we packed up and played some games. I played Uno with my friends. We did that until 8:00-breakfast!

For breakfast I had a milo and some nutri grain and yogurt. There were lots of things you could choose to have.

After breakfast We packed up and said what we liked. I said that I liked The poupou (carvings). I like the poupou because they have lots of designs in each poupou. After that we left.

Personal Comment/Ending
Tells how the experience/event ended and some thoughts you may have about it.

I really liked the marae and I would 100 % go again. It was really fun and the food was great.
