The business of babysitting
Every weekend there was one job Katipo hated doing : Babysitting her younger, cheeky brother and sister. They were twins and needed their nappies changed constantly. Now that she was 14 her parents had decided that she could babysit them. She’d much rather be building her latest robot invention in the shed. That was it! What if Katipo could build a robot to babysit her brother and sister! That night she said goodnight to her mum and dad and hopped into bed. When she heard her mum and dad go to bed she snuck out into the shed and started building her robot… When she was making the robot she decided it needed some hair. She chopped of some of her dark black hair and glued it to the robot to make it look more realistic. Her dark brown eyes were twinkling in excitement!
The next morning Katipo took her robot into the house. She hid it in her room. That night her mum and dad went out to dinner. Just when she was about to turn the robot on she realized it did not have a name. She thought hard for a moment then decided on the name Ahi (fire). She turned Ahi on. For a moment nothing happened. Then suddenly with a loud BANG the robot was on and in working order. She made sure the robot worked well. Katipo left the room and walked to her friends house.
When she came back later that night she almost fainted with what she saw. The room was a total mess, chairs were strewn across the room and paper was everywhere. In the middle of the mess was the two babies that were crying there heads off! Katipo ran over to them and tried to stop them crying. After she had got them to bed she went into her room. Can you guess what was lying in her bed fast asleep? Yep, Ahi. She went downstairs to tidy up the mess, it took for ever!
The next night when her parents were away Katipo decided to get the robot out one more time, but this time she would hide in the kitchen and watch what Ahi did. She had a strange feeling that there was something weird going on here……
She turned Ahi on and snuck into the kitchen. She saw the robot and at first thought nothing was happening. But then she saw the robot pick up Jess and sat on her. Than all she heard was a series of: pop, purp, poof. Jess was patero( farting) with the weight of the robot on her! The baby farted like a balloon bursting out of it’s space. Next the robot picked up and sat on Jesse. The robot was as Whakataumaha-heavy as a blue whale! The robot must have thought that it was supposed to Baby-SIT! Katipo then saw the robot go upstairs into her room. For the next half hour the babies got lots of things out and messed up the room lots. They took the playdough out and stuck it in the carpet, spilled milk all over the carpet, pulled all the paper out of the shelfs and dumped it everywhere and they also put baby powder all over themselves! The weight of the robot did not seem to have hurt the babies at all! It was too much to see! Katipo then burst into the room and started cleaning up. She put the babies to bed and went upstairs. That night she went to the shed with Ahi. She then destructed it and turned it off.
From now on Katipo always babysits and actually likes it! There is never much mess when SHE babysits!
