Summer Learning Journey Teaser Week

On the 9th-10th of December 2019 the girls from Room 8 went on a overnight hike in the St James Hike. We went to the Cannibal Gorge hut and dropped off our bags and then we walked to Ada Pass Hut and back.
We all met at school at 8am. We then had to weigh our bags. They were not supposed to be over 12 kgs. Luckily no ones was. We then left school in two different cars. In Cathy's car was Rebekah, Mackenzie, Milan, Brighid, Aimee and me. In Ms Kemps car was the other four girls, Sasha, Grace, Hannah and Jennae. There were 10 girls and 2 adults in total.
We then drove to Reefton and got our hut tickets. I already had a hut ticket so I didn't need to get one. We then drove all the way to the St James Car park and we get started. About 2 minutes into the walk there was a place where we had to fill to an intentions book.
After walking for about 3-4 hours we arrived at Cannibal Gorge hut. Rebekah, Grace and I went all the way underwater in the river. It was freezing! We then dropped out packs and Mackenzie, Aimee, Brighid and Cathy. The rest of us tramped the 7 km to and from Ada pass hut. We had to take water and snacks. Most of us filled up our drink bottles at little streams and the water tasted delicious.
When we got back it was pretty much time for dinner. Me and Sasha were working together for our meals. For our dinner we had dehy meals. I had Teriyaki Beef and Saha had Sweet and Sour Lamb. They both tasted pretty good. For dessert me and Sasha had Campfire Cones. They had melted chocolate and marshmallows in them and they were delicious.
After dinner we played a few games. The first game we played was trying to hit a target with a Shanghai/Slingshot. Non of us girls got the target but some of us were pretty close. The second game we played was called Flash. It was a card game using Skittles and Playing Cards. After that game we told stories too each other. We probably did that for almost an hour.
When we had almost finished all the stories, Cathy heard squeaking. Ms Kemp went down to check it out and it turns out there were a few mice sneaking around in the cabin. We ended up putting all of our packs above the ground because the mice were starting to get into them. Luckily nobody minded mice.
In the night I did not sleep very much because it was so hot because we had the fire going. In the morning me and Sasha made pancakes. They worked worked very well, and filled us. Pretty much straight after breakfast we left the hut. The tramp back was pretty easy, but we had a few injuries.
When we got back to the carpark we signed the intentions book. We then drove to Reefton where we got shouted ice creams from Ms Kemp. They tasted so good after our tramp.
I really enjoyed out tramp that we did and I think that we will all remember doing it.

Kea Collage

Today we had Mrs Minehan come into our classroom. Today we made collages using explore. We had to choose a textured coloured and then get it into the shape we wanted. I enjoyed doing this, even though it was quite hard. Here is my work. I hope you enjoy looking at it.

Film Festival Review

                                                      Film Festival 2019
On Thursday the 14th of November, the senior school of
Karoro school  went to the Regent Theatre to see the 2019
Toki Pounamu Film Festival in Greymouth. Other schools were
there too, including Kaniere, St Pats, Paroa, Paparoa Range,
Blaketown and Kumara. The Toki Pounamu Film Festival is a
group of films made by primary schools. This year the category
was ‘Our Place’. Some of the films were incredible even one using
a drone! Others had given it their best and were still cool to watch.

I loved many films. My favourite film was one created by
Paroa School Year 8 students. The actors were Sammi
Fahey, Pippa Robb, and Caitlyn Boddy. They were great
actors, often having to play at least two roles each. The video was
about a robber that was on the loose around their school. There was
a news reporter who was speaking to one of the two sheriffs, trying
to find the robber. The girls had props, which made the play look a
lot more life like. They even had slow motion effect, when capturing
the robber; which was very effective. The sound quality of the film
was very good, with no wind in the background. The only thing that
I didn’t get was that it was that the play still showed their school
but didn't really express what their place is. I really enjoyed this
film because it was entertaining to watch, and very funny.

One film I didn’t like very much was one by Grey Main down at the
pool. I liked that they had words on the side of the screen but the
videoing was terrible. You couldn't really see what was happening
because the screen was blurry and moving around a lot. The sound
quality was also not great. The film had a very cool special effect
though; they did fast motion walking to the pool which looked effective.

I think that when they are selecting what movies go into the film,
maybe next time they could get a few students whose videos are
not in the film, to help pick the ones that should be seen. This year
only adults chose, for an audience of children. I think this should
be changed.

Next year I hope they change the categories. The categories
could include, Who’s at your school, Movie trailers, Turangawaiwai,
advertisements for local products and you could even show around
your school. I really enjoyed the festival. It had lots of fun videos.
It was nice to watch, even without a movie in it.

Kowhaiwhai Art

                                                   Moana

For He Kākano we had to create Kowhaiwhai patterns on canvases.
We had to know what our pattern meant. We also got to choose
whether we chose to do a modern or traditional patterns.
Me and Grace chose to do a traditional kowhaiwhai pattern
surrounded by our own art. Our Mahi toi represents the Moana.
At the top there are dolphins jumping out of the water.
The kowhaiwhai pattern in the middle represents the cutting
of a waka on waves ( water). The paua shell is magical.
The dolphins swore an oath to protect the Moana.
In return, the Paua shell would give half of its colour
and sparkle to the dolphins. That is why on half of the
paua shell all you can see is its underneath Maori patterns.
We used a range of colours to represent and show the beauty of the Moana.
We also wanted to show that not only above the sea is beautiful;below is too.

Uncomfortable is OK Speech

Uncomfortable is OK

Kia Ora, Ko Dakota toku ingoa. Ko Karoro toku kura.

When was the last time you were uncomfortable? I don’t mean
that annoying label at the back of your t-shirt or when your Nana
tries to give you one of those big sloppy kisses. I’m talking
uncomfortable as in right out of your comfort zone - walking a creaky 3 strand swing
bridge over a raging river uncomfortable or walking on stage in front of your classmates.
But here I am.

Do you think you have ever been properly out of your comfort zone?
Most people try not to come out of their comfort zones. In fact,
most people do whatever they can to stay comfortable! It is scientifically
proven that being uncomfortable is ok. For example, I've heard a podcast
on a lady called Christine who did 10 ironmans in 10 days ( a Deca- ironman).
A Deca Iroman is a 38 km ( 760 lengths of the pool) swimming 1800 km for biking
and 238.4 km for the run. She holds the women's world record for a Deca-ironman.
Christine said that at some points she was so wet that her feet started to rot. By the
end of the bike she couldn’t move her hands. Why do you think that she did this race?
Because it was the most rewarding thing she has ever done. So, what have we learnt from
Christine? We’ve learnt that you still need to push your limits and keep going even if things get hard.

Being uncomfortable is a big mind over matter thing, as people would say. What I mean by this
is that even if your body is shaking with being scared you should still keep doing what you’re doing.
Sometimes your body will have to break its limits. Sometimes, you have to push
further than ever before. Have you heard of Jade Hameister? She is an 18 year old girl who,
at the age of 14- 16 years skied to the North Pole, the South Pole and across Greenland. In
doing this, she became the youngest person (female or male) to ever complete the polar hat-trick.
She was so cold that she got frostbite on her bum from going to the toilet! Jade had to push herself
to her very limits, pulling up to 55 kgs on her sled. She said that she was both mentally and physically
tired. She also said though, that it was the best thing she has ever done and she doesn’t regret any of it.

The idea of being uncomfortable was thought of by psychologists Robert Yerkes and John  Dodson
in 1908. They told everyone that if you are comfortable in life you will do OK. If you want to
make your performance a lot better though it is good to be a little anxious. This is called
‘Optimal Anxiety’. If you are too anxious though, you will be stressed and will not do well.
Anyone who has pushed themselves to the limit will be able to tell you that it is and feels great-
and sometimes is a little scary to push your boundaries that little bit further.
They will tell you that if you do this you will achieve great things.

People, all over the world, everyday, are uncomfortable. They are pushing their bodies to the limit,
having fun and doing well. Activities people are doing include skiing, climbing, public speaking,
sleepovers, and trying a new food. So, what are you next going to try? Because, remember
Uncomfortable is OK!

Just My Tree And Me

 Just My Tree and Me
Me and tree have been best friends
Since we were three.
We are just little
Just My Tree & me

Now we’re nine and doing just fine
I play music on tree,
Bang, Bong, Bing
Just My Tree & me

Me and my tree are now eleven
Tree wraps his arms around me,
And I feel happy,
Just my tree and me

Me and tree have just turned fifteen
I lie in his branches,
And we read adventurous stories
Just my tree and me

Now we’re 18 and I have to say goodbye
I really don’t want to cry
 We were always besties,
Just my tree and me...

Grey Main Super Stan Performance

The Amazing Adventures of Super Stan

Grey Main school pupils invited Rooms 1, 7 and 8 to a play they were
putting on on the 7th of August. They were putting on a play called
The Amazing Adventures of Super Stan. Grey Main perform a play
annually. The play was at Grey Main hall in Greymouth. Grey Main Pupils
invited us to the dress rehearsal so that they could have an audience in
front of them.

Firstly, we received an invitation to go. We didn’t have to pay to go because
it was a dress rehearsal. We bussed down to the play in the afternoon.
The play started at 12:50. It didn’t take long for the play to start when
we got there.

The play started with Stanley dreaming. Stanley was a very clumsy boy who
lives a pretty normal life He was dreaming that the Bogey Man was in town
and that he needed to save the town. He turned into Super Stan and
defeated the Bogey Man.

Next, the Candy King fed the gobstoppers to the townspeople.
The gobstoppers are actually controlling. Soon all
the townspeople were under the Candy King’s Power.
Mayor Donut was the only one who refused to eat a gobstopper.

Stan’s Grandma comes
and tells Stan that she and her friends are running a
marathon. She also tells Stan that she has a secret.
She and her friends invented Formula 44. Formula 44
was a serum that makes you turn into a Superhero.
When Stan was little Grandma accidentally gave Stan
half a dose of Formula 44 in his bottle instead of milk.

Stan, and his family found out that the Candy King was Bad.
They find out because everyone in the town was under the
Candy King's Command.

Grandma injected Stan with the other half of the Serum  and
Stan started to transform into a Superhero. He went through
some stages to become a superhero. First, he started to shake.
Then he started to make animal noises. After that he sung opera.
Finally, he began to fart. He was now Super Stan. Grandma gave
Stan his Grandads Super Undies. They are elastic undies that make
stan be able to defy gravity. That was the only thing that Formula
44 couldn’t do.

Stan went and tried to defeat the Candy King. When he got near the
Candy King's lair though, his powers start to run out until they completely
ran out. Stan was very sad. Luckily his Grandma came and injected the serum
into him before he went into the lair.

Super Stan went into the Candy King’s Lair. He and the Candy
King had a fight. In the end Super Stan defeated the Candy King.
The Candy King Shrunk. Then Grandma gets the mini Candy King.
The Characters ended the show by coming up and bowing. The show
ended up going for about 1: 50 minutes

I really enjoyed watching the show because it was very
entertaining. It was quite a funny show which was very cool.
It made me laugh sometimes.

Jake Bailey Speech

Jake Bailey came to talk to the senior school today. Jake Bailey was a head boy at both intermediate and high school. He went to Christchurch Boys High. He is now 21 years old but when he was diagnosed with cancer he was 18 years old. He is pretty funny.

He was here to tell us a little about his journey through cancer and also to tell us some life skills. He was brought here by life education.

Before he knew he had cancer he felt a pain in his jaw. He went to the dentist and the dentist told him there was this weird spot of something in his jaw. Later, before  some of his teeth were to be taken out, the whole bottom of his jaw went completely numb. He also started vomiting out blood. The was taken to hospital where the doctors took some tests including, a bone marrow transplant.  A doctor he had never seen later cam in and gently told him he had cancer.

He was told that if he didn't get chemotherapy now, he would die in the next two weeks. Jake Bailey had cancer for 4-5 months. Most people who have cancer have it for about 1-2 years. Jake had Burkitt's Non-hodgkin lymphoma. It is the fastest growing cancer ever. It doubles in size everyday!

Some of the life skills he told us about were resilience, happiness, leadership and bravery. At the end he told us that we need to do as much as we can with our lives and live our lives also on the behalf of those who didn't survive cancer and other illnesses. He wanted us to be the best us we could be.

He told us that happiness is something you earn and something you practise and try to have. Leadership is something that you have. You will need it later in life. To be resilient you have to try and try again. Resilient is something you also earn, he said. Bravery is something that you can develop. Most people in their lives will need a lot of bravery.

I think that Jake Bailey is a great person, who inspires a lot of people. I would recommend either watching his speech he gave otr reading the book he wrote, What Cancer Taught Me.

Lake Daniell

Lake Daniell

Last Wednesday the 12th of June. Rooms 1 and 8 went on a tramp
at Lake Daniell. Ms Kemp and Mrs Robins came with us along with
8 other parents. It took us 5 hours to walk the track. While we were walking
the track we had to work in groups  for a treasure hunt.

We went to Lake Daniell because rm 1 and 8 are doing the William Pike
Challenge award. Since we are learning about hypothermia we decided to go
in winter. We had to keep lots of warm layers on to stop us getting cold.

We had lunch at the hut. Once we were finished our lunch some of us went onto
the jetty. We didn’t stay long once we were finished our lunch because it had
started to lightly rain. We didn’t stop on the way back but on the way

Lake Daniell is near Lewis Pass. Lewis Pass is part of the Southern Alps.
The track starts at a campsite just past Springs Junction.
It follows a river up the land for part of the way and then the river breaks of.
The track leads to Lake Daniell.

This trip could not have happened if we had not had all the lovely parents
volunteer to help us. They had to transport us there and back. We are very
thankful to them and the teachers because without them we wouldn’t have
been able to go. We also made this trip happen by having the right gear.
If we hadn't have the right gear we wouldn’t be able to go because we
would probably get hypothermia.
