Film Festival Review

                                                      Film Festival 2019

On Thursday the 14th of November, the senior school of
Karoro school  went to the Regent Theatre to see the 2019
Toki Pounamu Film Festival in Greymouth. Other schools were
there too, including Kaniere, St Pats, Paroa, Paparoa Range,
Blaketown and Kumara. The Toki Pounamu Film Festival is a
group of films made by primary schools. This year the category
was ‘Our Place’. Some of the films were incredible even one using
a drone! Others had given it their best and were still cool to watch. 

I loved many films. My favourite film was one created by
Paroa School Year 8 students. The actors were Sammi
Fahey, Pippa Robb, and Caitlyn Boddy. They were great
actors, often having to play at least two roles each. The video was
about a robber that was on the loose around their school. There was
a news reporter who was speaking to one of the two sheriffs, trying
to find the robber. The girls had props, which made the play look a
lot more life like. They even had slow motion effect, when capturing
the robber; which was very effective. The sound quality of the film
was very good, with no wind in the background. The only thing that
I didn’t get was that it was that the play still showed their school
but didn't really express what their place is. I really enjoyed this
film because it was entertaining to watch, and very funny.

One film I didn’t like very much was one by Grey Main down at the
pool. I liked that they had words on the side of the screen but the
videoing was terrible. You couldn't really see what was happening
because the screen was blurry and moving around a lot. The sound
quality was also not great. The film had a very cool special effect
though; they did fast motion walking to the pool which looked effective. 

I think that when they are selecting what movies go into the film,
maybe next time they could get a few students whose videos are
not in the film, to help pick the ones that should be seen. This year
only adults chose, for an audience of children. I think this should
be changed.

Next year I hope they change the categories. The categories
could include, Who’s at your school, Movie trailers, Turangawaiwai,
advertisements for local products and you could even show around
your school. I really enjoyed the festival. It had lots of fun videos.
It was nice to watch, even without a movie in it. 

Kowhaiwhai Art

                                                   Moana

For He Kākano we had to create Kowhaiwhai patterns on canvases.
We had to know what our pattern meant. We also got to choose
whether we chose to do a modern or traditional patterns.
Me and Grace chose to do a traditional kowhaiwhai pattern
surrounded by our own art. Our Mahi toi represents the Moana.
At the top there are dolphins jumping out of the water.
The kowhaiwhai pattern in the middle represents the cutting
of a waka on waves ( water). The paua shell is magical.
The dolphins swore an oath to protect the Moana.
In return, the Paua shell would give half of its colour
and sparkle to the dolphins. That is why on half of the
paua shell all you can see is its underneath Maori patterns.
We used a range of colours to represent and show the beauty of the Moana.
We also wanted to show that not only above the sea is beautiful;below is too.
