Camp letter

20 November 2018

Dear Gemma

Thank you so so much for taking us on camp. I really enjoyed it.
All the organising was done really well. How many different hikes do you do per year?
So far at Arthurs pass on camp I have done the Bealey Spur Hike and the Anti Crow
Hut Hike.  A thing I learnt about you is that you get lots of schools coming to do th
e hikes and that you do lots of hikes regularly!

I liked how you set up and ran the games like Huckle Buckle,
the Tarp game, the Carpet game, the Spider Web, the Tyre game
and Chuck the Dino. My personal favourites of those games was the
Carpet game
and Huckle Buckle. Huckle Buckle really got you thinking when you
were running up
to meet your partner. Me and Sasha (my partner) ended up winning.
The carpet game was really good to get me knowing my classmates.
The Spider game also had to have some maths done in your head of
who was lightest and who would go through each hole. I ended up going
through a bottom hole that was low to the ground but wide. What other
games do you usually run?

The Tramp was also a personal favourite for me. I really
enjoyed it because it had some challenging spots and easy fun spots.
I loved where we stopped for lunch on the ‘cliff’ and we could run around, wild.
I do lots of tramps but have never done one that is on a dry river bed and super rocky.
It was a challenging part of the hike for me because I get sore feet  easily and the rocks
certainly weren’t helping. When I stood in a little stream it felt good though!
About how many times have you done that walk? It was soooo fun!
Me and my friends enjoyed it so much that we are going to go back
and do the hike again together! We are going to swim where we river crossed.

The River crossing really got my brain thinking.
It was such a fun thing to do and I think that it
was a lot funner than last year because it was deeper
and swifter! Do you usually or have you ever done river crossings there?
I was in group with my friends Sasha, Mackenzie, Billie and Summer.
My team worked really well together I think we did a good job at the river crossing.
When I got out of the water my feet were so cold but they warmed up on the walk back.

Somewhere I would like to go for more camps is Arthurs Pass and Gentle Annie

Thank you again.

Ngā mihi
Yours sincerely

Descriptive Writing

At the moment in class we have been working on descriptive writing. We have been using pictures to give us ideas of what to write about. Here is piece of writing I did.

Click here for a link to the original work.

Lochie

“Mum,” I scream! “Daaaad,” I start to cry. “ROAR!” A loud searing sound
enters my brain. My 8 year old voice screams even louder.
I couldn’t believe that this had happened and that my parents were dead!
A gigantic Brachiosaurus dinosaur with red and blue skin gallops as it wrestles
through the thick tangle of ferns. He starts licking my blue shirt shoulder.

Hi I’m Sasha and last year my parents sadly died in a car crash. Their car had
gone off track and we were deep in the bush when a thick branch fell on my
mum and dad in the car. They were dead immediately. I think that the world

has not seen a dinosaur before because I think they didn’t know what
humans were. Lochie had lived deep in the bush unfound until he
heard my cries of help. Lochie saved me. I now live in camouflaging
bush with my bright coloured Brachiosaurus dinosaur, Lochie.
I ride Lochie to our awesome school and hide him in the mysterious school
shed. I lie at my school, Eiznekcam, because if my teacher knew I lived in the
bush they would tell the police and the police would put me in a stinky old
home. Our school has only whā tekau mā rua (42) pupils and
rua (two) classes.  I am so excited because on Friday our school has pet day.
I know that the class, Miss Tirie and the teacher aid,
Miss Take will love Lochie.

As I walk Lochie to school, my whole body is tied in knots.
Maybe I am wrong about bringing him to school.
But a voice in my head starts telling me to do it.
Lochie is frightened of our school because it has one bright red class room,
a bright orange library, a yellow staff room, a green classroom and a blue tech
room. They are so bright and he is scared of bright colours!
I hikoi (walk) to school and Lochie can’t fit in the door of my classroom.
I whisper to Lochie to stay where he is. I sprint as fast as a pronghorn
antelope (very fast). I tell Miss Tirie that my pet can not fit in the door.
A few kids in our bright coloured school tops are peering at me.
I say to Miss Tirie, “Can I show you him?”
She walks out with me and her face contorted into a shrieking figure.
She screams so loud that the glass of her glasses shatters.
Everybody runs away and Miss Tirie pushes the emergency button.
Everybody runs out of the school. Lochie starts crying and
I try to comfort him but his whole body is shaking.

I encourage Miss Tirie to come see him again. I tell her he is friendly.
She slowly tiptoes up to Lochie and I tell her to stroke him.
She gently lifts her hand up to stroke him. She says, “
His skin is as scaly as a large fish,” I ask her if she wants a ride on him.
She says that she doesn’t! All the other kids ask if they can though.
Miss Take says she will try it first to make sure it is safe.
I give her a boost and she hops on lopsidedly and I walk
Lochie around. Lochie gives a roar of approval.
I whisper to Lochie ”Well done,”.

Weka Information Report

                   Rendered Image
The Weka is a non-endangered manu that lives all over Aotearoa.

Weka are all different types of parauri (brown). They are a light light brown to an almost pango(black). It depends where they live to what colour they are.  Weka have whero (red) eyes. They have strong parauri (brown) to mawhero (pink) legs.

Weka live all over Aotearoa. They are found throughout the Marlborough Sounds, scattered in other regions of Nelson, the upper West Coast, and Fiordland in the South Island. They are found mainly in bush and forest areas.

Weka eat mainly fruit and invertebrates. They have been recorded to eat things as large as stoats, rats and petrels. Weka also eat a lot of hua (eggs), lizards, iti(small) mammals and birds.

Weka breed from late winter to early summer. They usually have tahi (one) to rima(five) hua(eggs) per clutch. The female does most of the incubation between early morning and late afternoon and the male does the rest, and most of the parental care.

Weka live in families with their children. They are from the Rallidae family. They live for about rima (five) to rua tekau (twenty) years. The weka’s best known call is a repetitive, loud ‘coo-et’ that is usually heard at dusk and in the early evning. It is presented as a duet, with the male giving the lower and slower part.

The main threats to weka are starvation during no rain periods and predation by mustelids especially ferrets. They can also be killed by wild dogs and large creatures. Weka are legally hunted on the chatham islands and on some muttonbird islands.

No Need For Plastic!!

As part of our topic we have been learning about reducing waste. To help the environment with this my class made fabric bags to use instead of plastic bags. We also made lots of beeswax wraps. Beeswax wrap is used instead of glad wrap. Hopefully it helps the environment a little as we are not using plastic. I learnt how to make a beeswax cloth and hopefully I can make some more at home to help the environment. I enjoyed making these because they are so handy.
All you have to do is put fabric with grated beeswax on baking paper
and put another layer of baking paper on top of that. You then have to iron it and melt the wax into the cloth. For the fabric bags we had to cut out our pattern and then sew it. Here are some photo`s.

Maui and the giant Ika

Long long ago before Aotearoa there was a man called Maui.
Maui asked his brothers if he can go fishing with them.
His brothers all said, “No!”
That night Maui made a plan and made a  fishing line.
While he is doing that he chants a karakia.
He then gets the jaw bone of his grandmother….

Early that morning, Maui hides in his brothers waka unseen.
When the brothers are far out at Moana
Maui jumps out and surprises his brothers.
The brothers then fish and while they are fishing Maui chants
a Karakia and the brothers pull up heaps of Ika.

Maui starts fishing with the jaw bone of his grandmother, and calls
his karakia. Maui suddenly gets a great big; giant bite at the end of the string.
With great will he pulls up a giant stingray and his brothers all
start arguing about what piece they want. They cut pieces out
of the stingray. They stingray now lies as the North Island of Aotearoa.

THE END

When my group did our play one thing we did well was
bringing things for costumes. As a team the first part of
each session the boys started off yelling and not focused.
But by 10 minutes of each practise time, we were into the practise.
I think we ended up working well together in the end.
Our play went well when we performed but I think the
play needed more acting and less talking.
Everyone in our team participated by have
lines and acting in the play.
Everybody contributed by bringing in at least one thing.
We all also contributed by giving ideas to the play.
One thing I would like to improve is have more acting,
and everybody starting to practise as soon as we have been
let to go to practise!
